Another Taste of Chaplin

If things go as planned, my novel, "Shadow and Substance: My Time with Charlie Chaplin," will be off the press by next weekend. Later in the week I'll probably post the first chapter. In the meantime, here's a wonderful scene for your enjoyment. It's from "The Great Dictator," (1940) with Chaplin performing a marvelous pantomime to a familiar piece of classical music.

  1. Gerry,

Pretty scary shave. And, what a beat that barber makes with his razor. Love the shelves of shaving mugs in the background.

Eager to see your new book.

  2. I went to The Big Read in Clayton yesterday. Nice event. Lots of local authors around. I made a couple of interesting contacts. Also heard from a writer whose daughter is a big Charlie Chaplin fan. They're everywhere.

  3. Gerry, good to see you yesterday. I sent this blog to my daughter, and I'm going to order the book for her (oops! hope she doesn't read this). I'll need to check and see if I can pre-order now--or will you have a release party?

  4. I've been in touch with your daughter, Dianna. Sounds as though she is well grounded in the basics of old movies, Charlie Chaplin, and SCTV. About my book's publication: I'm really a novice at this, so haven't thought a release party. Probably not. It's all I can do to try to line up readings and interviews. I think I'll just go door-to-door and peddle it. You can order the book through Robin Theiss at www.stlbooks.com. I'd love to sign the book to your daughter. You can email me about getting the book from me.

  5. Sounds good, Gerry. I'll contact you and work out details to get it signed--or bring it to an SLWG event if I find out you're going to be there.
